Board Guy Category: RAM – Bare (No Shields)

Notes: Logic boards removed from hard disk drives (HDDs). Commonly found on desktop, laptop, server, and external hard drives. Contain controller ICs, memory chips, gold-plated edge connections, and precision electronic components that make them significantly more valuable than standard appliance or power boards.

Overview

Hard drive logic boards are the electronic control boards mounted to the underside of mechanical hard disk drives. Their purpose is to manage data transfer, motor control, head positioning, and communication between the drive and the computer.

These boards are highly sought after in the electronics recycling industry due to their concentration of integrated circuits, controller chips, memory devices, and gold-plated connectors. While relatively small, they often deliver excellent value per kilogram because they contain a dense mix of valuable electronic components.

HDD logic boards are commonly recovered from desktop computers, laptops, servers, external hard drives, network storage devices (NAS), and enterprise storage equipment

Identifying HDD Logic Boards

HDD logic boards are typically:

  • Mounted to the underside of a hard disk drive.

  • Green, blue, or black in colour.

  • Populated with several large integrated circuits.

  • Fitted with SATA, IDE (PATA), or SAS interface connectors.

  • Often include a motor controller chip and cache memory chip.

  • Usually weigh between 30 and 80 grams each.

Preparation for Recycling

For best results:

  • Remove the logic board completely from the hard drive.

  • Separate boards from aluminium drive casings and steel covers.

  • Remove attached cables, brackets, and mounting hardware where practical.

  • Keep HDD logic boards separate from standard mixed electronic scrap.

  • Store boards in a dry container to prevent corrosion and contamination.

Complete boards generally attract the highest value. Damaged, burnt, or heavily corroded boards may be downgraded depending on condition.

HDD logic boards are a distinct category because they contain a concentrated mix of controller electronics and precious-metal-bearing components, making them one of the more valuable small-format circuit boards commonly encountered during computer recycling and asset recovery.
