Board Guy Category: Laptop Motherboard
Typical value: Mid to upper range

Notes: Compact, high-density logic boards from notebook and ultrabook systems. Despite their small size, they contain strong chip density and valuable soldered BGAs, offering excellent yield per kilogram compared to standard desktop boards.

Overview

Laptop motherboards are compact circuit boards designed for use in portable computers. They integrate most system components directly onto the board -including the CPU, GPU, and RAM to save space and weight.

While physically smaller than desktop motherboards, they often contain a higher concentration of precious metals per kilogram. The combination of multiple soldered BGA chips, integrated memory, and fine trace density makes them one of the more desirable classes of mixed electronic scrap.

These boards are typically found in laptops, notebooks, ultrabooks, and compact all-in-one systems.

Identifying a Laptop Motherboard

Typical features include:

  • Compact, irregular shape rather than rectangular

  • One or more large square BGAs (CPU/GPU) soldered directly to the board

  • Multiple small connectors for display, USB, and battery inputs

  • Prominent mounting points for cooling fans or heatpipes

  • High IC density with minimal open space

Boards from gaming or workstation laptops may have heavier copper layers or multiple BGAs, while entry-level models may have a single CPU BGA and fewer components.

Preparation for Recycling

Before selling or recycling:

  • Remove heatsinks, fans, and copper heatpipes -these add weight but no board value

  • Leave soldered CPUs, GPUs, and RAM in place -they define the board’s yield

  • Remove all batteries, SSDs, and Wi-Fi modules

  • Detach any steel brackets or shields if easily removable

When properly prepared, laptop motherboards typically outperform standard desktop motherboards on a per-kilogram basis, making them a consistent mid-to-upper-range category in mixed loads.
