Board Guy Category: Standard Motherboard
Typical value: Mid-range

Notes: Serves as the reference class for general PC boards - more valuable than low-grade power boards, but below high-density server and telecom boards.

Overview

Standard motherboards are the most common type of circuit board found inside desktop computers. They serve as the central platform that connects the CPU, RAM, storage, and expansion cards - effectively the backbone of the entire system.

Most are ATX or micro-ATX in layout, with a familiar mix of CPU sockets, RAM slots, PCIe connectors, and rear I/O ports.

In recycling, these boards form the baseline category. They offer moderate yields of precious metals, especially when fully populated with chips and connectors. But, they generally lack the high-density gold and specialised components found in server or telecom boards.

Identifying a Standard Motherboard

Typical features include:

  • A large CPU socket with metal bracket or pins

  • 2–4 RAM slots, long and parallel

  • Several PCIe slots for graphics or expansion cards

  • I/O ports such as USB, HDMI, or Ethernet along one edge

  • Flat, low-profile capacitors and visible copper traces

The reverse side is usually smooth, showing solder points but few mounted components. Boards from gaming or high-performance systems may include decorative heatsinks or RGB fittings, but these do not usually add scrap value.

Preparation for Recycling

Before selling or recycling:

  1. Remove the CPU and its heatsink - the CPU has separate value, and the heatsink adds non-recyclable weight.

  2. Other heatsinks can remain, as they are typically attached to voltage regulators or chipsets and are accounted for in standard grading.

  3. Remove the coin-cell battery from the motherboard - these cannot be accepted due to hazardous material regulations.

  4. Detach metal backplates if easily removable.

A complete board with intact ICs and connectors will always achieve a better grade.
